Dyn discontinues free DNS. FreeDNS with Namecheap will remain free

Dyn, a popular provider of free DNS products recently announced that it’s free service will cease on May 7th, 2014. This means anyone using their free DNS hosting has to upgrade to a paid version or will get cut off. Their paid version costs $25 per year just for DNS services.

For years, Namecheap has offered a free DNS service – even for those that have no domain or other paid services with us. We’ve recently invested heavily into upgrading our Free DNS service and it is more robust and resilient than ever. We now have a large cluster of servers spread across North America and Europe, delivering fast and reliable DNS services. For free.

We also have a regular DNS product, hosted on a separate DNS cluster, for those who register and renew domain names through us. Like Free DNS, it is a product we’re investing heavily in, and it will continue to offer world-class DNS services.

New TLDs: Early Access & More

Did you know most of the new TLDs being released these days have an Early Access Program? With EAP, you can purchase your new domain names before the TLD goes into General Availability, for an extra fee. In most cases, EAP starts three days before GA and the extra fee is $105 (plus the regular registration fee). These five enter EAP on April 6 and GA on April 9: .coffee, .florist, .house, .international, and .solar. Visit the registration page to get your new names now. And check out our New TLDs page to learn how you can stay informed about new domains entering EAP and GA.

We Totally Have .selfie & .zombie TLDs

Today, April 1, the head honchos of the internet have finally decided to lighten up and release some domain options that make sense for our times. Check ‘em out…

Do you wonder if you should post that photo of yourself shirtless in the bathroom? The answer is: Yes, of course the whole world wants to see your pecs! That’s why you need to register a .selfie domain. (Note: If all your selfies involve meat products, that means you’ve already moved on to the new porkchop craze and should register .porkchop instead.) generic_FBimage_4

If you’re planning to launch a dead website – one that starts out great, but then you forget about it or never have time to update it, so it lingers online in a state of festering decay for who knows how long – the new .zombie domain is just what you need.

Want to launch a real slacker website that serves no purpose? When you get around to it, you could register a URL with the new .whatevs TLD.

Here’s a true story, dude: If you and your buds like to drink many beers and spin yarns, you should totally register a .coolstorybro domain name.

And when Mom tells you to be home by nine, if you answer “Uh-uh!” – then there’s even a new TLD for you today, missy. It’s .uhuhSee if you can register some new domain names right now!
